Dealul Mitropoliei
Back to all places
One of the city’s heritage landmarks, Dealul Metropoliei or Patriarchate Hill commands enormous cultural, architectural and religious significance. The very nucleus of Romanian Orthodoxy, this hill has played an integral role in framing the course of Romanian history. In the heart of the hill is the palatial Roman Patriarchal Cathedral. Built in the mid-1600s, this glorious cathedral, having been the ground of many nationally-significant events, is the center-point of the Dealul Mitropoliei. The Patriarchal Palace, on the other hand, harbors a wealth of rooms replete with ornamentations, paintings and sculptures. Another iconic edifice perched on the hill is the Bell Tower which mightily lords over the surrounding environs of the hill. The Palace of the Chamber of Deputies also inhabits the hill’s historic fabric and is a vision with a Neo-classical facade, Roman columns, paintings and sculptures. One of the major tourist draws in Bucharest, Dealul Mitropoliei is also home to the elegant Statue of Alexander John Cuza and the Sun Clock which has ties with the iconic Wallachian Revolution of 1848.
